The Jeddah-based institution is emerging as a key force behind the Kingdom’s growing pipeline of women in engineering and technology.
As Saudi Arabia accelerates its push to diversify and digitize its economy, one university in Jeddah has been quietly doing the work of building the workforce that transformation requires. Effat University, the Kingdom’s first institution to offer engineering degrees to women, now counts more than 700 students enrolled across its Computer Science, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Information Technology programs — a number that reflects years of deliberate investment in female tech education.
The results are becoming hard to ignore. The Middle East now produces 57% female STEM graduates, compared to just 34% in the United States — a figure that places the region among the global leaders in women’s participation in technical fields. Effat sits at the center of that shift.
A Curriculum Built Around Employment
The university’s approach to tech education is grounded in a straightforward goal: producing graduates who are ready to work the moment they leave campus.
Students progress from core technical foundations in programming, data structures, and network systems into specialized tracks in Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, and Data Analytics. Each of these pathways is designed around the specific demands of Saudi Arabia’s expanding digital economy rather than generic academic standards.
Practical training is built directly into the degree structure. Every student completes at least one industry-supervised internship and a final-year capstone project developed in collaboration with an external partner. The university has also integrated micro-credentials and professional certifications into its programs, giving graduates additional tools to demonstrate specific skills to employers.
The employment outcomes reflect the approach: 41.2% of Effat graduates secure a job within six months of completing their degree.

Beyond the classroom, Effat has made significant investment in research infrastructure that gives students exposure to some of the most in-demand areas in global technology. The university’s AI labs are active research environments where students work on projects spanning robotics, autonomous systems, and computer vision.
With the global AI market projected to reach $1.8 trillion by 2030, demand for professionals with hands-on experience in these areas is intensifying. Effat’s research programs are designed to ensure its graduates are not just aware of these developments, but trained to lead them.
“When women lead in technology, they don’t just transform industries — they transform societies. Our graduates are proving that women’s leadership in tech is key to building a more creative, inclusive, and sustainable future,” Dr. Balfagih said.
Part of a Wider Regional Shift
Effat’s growth comes against the backdrop of sweeping reforms under Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which has systematically expanded opportunities for women across education and employment. The impact on STEM enrollment has been significant, with female participation in technical programs rising sharply across the Kingdom in recent years.
The trend extends across the wider Gulf region as well. Programs such as the UAE’s Nafis initiative are driving similar gains in neighboring economies, contributing to a regional picture in which women are entering engineering and technology careers at rates that now exceed those of men.
“What we’re seeing is a complete cultural transformation. Our students are redefining what leadership in tech looks like — not just for the Kingdom, but for the entire region,” Dr. Balfagih added.

Founded in 1999 and operating under the King Faisal Charitable Foundation, Effat University offers undergraduate and graduate programs across engineering, business, architecture, and the humanities.
